Underfloor Cleaning of an Operational Data Centre

Subfloor Plenum Decontamination & Airflow Optimization | Operational Mission-Critical Facility

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Deep Subfloor Plenum Decontamination

Data Center Specialists (DCS) performed comprehensive subfloor plenum cleaning and particulate extraction for an active, operational enterprise data centre in Malaysia.

The raised floor plenum serves as the primary supply air duct delivering cold air to high-density server racks. The project focused on eradicating accumulated concrete dust, micro-particulates, and potential zinc whisker formations beneath the floor tiles without disrupting live air distribution, static pressure balance, or critical subfloor cabling.

THE CHALLENGE

Managing Pressurized Air Delivery Highways

Because the subfloor plenum delivers cooling directly to server intakes, any improperly dislodged dust or pressure loss directly threatens equipment reliability.

01

Airflow Pressure Depressurization

Lifting too many floor tiles at once causes pressurized cold air to bypass server racks, creating hot spots and thermal alarms in active server rows.

02

Zinc Whiskers & Concrete Dust Migration

Electroplated zinc on tile undersides and aging concrete sub-slabs generate conductive micro-particulates that can short-circuit high-voltage server power supplies if drawn into cooling fans.

OUR APPROACH

Controlled Quadrant Decontamination Protocol

DCS deployed a disciplined, quadrant-based subfloor protocol designed specifically to maintain uninterrupted cooling pressure while achieving ISO cleanroom standards.

Every step was synchronized with facility building management systems (BMS) to ensure optimal static air pressure and complete ESD safety throughout the operation.

01

Strict Tile Lifting Quota (1–2 Tiles)

Technicians lifted a maximum of two tiles per quadrant using heavy-duty vacuum suction lifters, instantly preserving cooling airflow dynamics.

02

ULPA-Filtered Vacuum Extraction

Direct deep extraction of the concrete slab, pedestal bases, and cable runs using certified 0.12-micron ULPA vacuums with anti-static wands.

03

Static-Safe Damp Wiping

Specialist lint-free cleanroom wipes treated with anti-static solutions to sanitize steel pedestals, stringers, and subfloor conduit runs.

04

Tile Underside & Gasket Sanitization

Cleaning tile edges, airflow damper seals, and underside metal plates before returning tiles to their exact original seating.

SPECIALIZED EXPERTISE

Why Operational Underfloor Cleaning Is Vital

Out of sight should never mean out of mind. Contamination residing beneath raised floor tiles is continuously agitated by high-velocity CRAH airflow and injected directly into server chassis. Accumulated subfloor dust also clogs perforated floor grilles, creating thermal resistance and driving up CRAC energy consumption.

Regular, professional underfloor cleaning by DCS certified technicians eliminates short-circuit hazards, improves cooling energy efficiency, and ensures continuous compliance with ISO 14644-1 and ASHRAE TC 9.9 standards.
